Handmade by Brianna Bluce Designs
guitar strings, piano strings, semi precious gemstones.
Steel guitar strings push and pull the thick bass strings into sails while semi-precious gemstones weight the sails into vertical alignment. Hang it in front of a window, near a crib, or in a corner that needs energizing. The wound texture on the strings shimmers in the light, bringing depth and interest. You’re meant to interact, touch and turn it. Give it a spin whenever you walk by and become mesmerized by its gentle movement.
These mobiles are inspired by my cohort of friends who had their first children in the summer of 2020. With the city shuttered, I had time to explore new forms of expression and decided to experiment with mobiles for their nurseries. I wanted to make a mobile for the newborn, but I also wanted it to be for the new mother and father. A piece of art that is enjoyed together for a lifetime. The colorful nature of the gemstones and kinetic armature engages the young, while the elegant complexity and fine detailing are composed for the adults. A mobile for all ages.
Size: width 7", height 22” plus extension for hanging
Gemstones: Sodalite, pyrite, sunstone, and serpentine.
Wire: I collect previously played guitar, piano, and bass strings from local music stores in Portland, Oregon. They are sorted and aggressively hand-cleaned. Besides the gemstones, the mobile is made of 100% recycled instrument strings.
Each mobile is one of a kind and finished with a steel ring for hanging.
